Do I need a Building Permit?
Building permit information pertaining to 1 & 2 family dwellings.
You will need a building permit to make improvements to your property including but not limited to the following:
• Construction of a new structure. • Installation of a new roof. • Construction of an addition. • Installation of siding. • Construction of a deck. • Interior renovations or alterations. • Construction of a garage. • Construction or installation of a shed. • Installation of swimming pool in-ground or aboveground. • Any installation or movement of electrical wires. • Any installation or replacement of heating or air conditioning equipment. • Any installation of plumbing supply, drains, waste or vent lines. The following improvements would not require a building permit: • Construction of a patio if at ground level. • Painting, wallpapering, flooring, cabinets, counters, electrical fixtures.
What information do I need to apply?
• Zoning permit (if required). • Detailed description of work. • Drawings (Floor Plans/Cross Section) • License and insurance. (Some or all of the above may be required)
Inspections.
It is the obligation of the property owner/agent/contractor to call the Town of East Haven Building Department (468-3216) to schedule all required inspections. The Building Official will ensure, to the best of his ability, that all construction complies with the current Connecticut State Building Code.
Certificate of Occupancy.
Upon approval of the final inspection and submittal of all required documentation (Zoning, Health Dept., if applicable) a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued. It is a violation of the State Statute to occupy a newly constructed building or addition, without a Certificate of Occupancy. F. Am I allowed to do the work myself? Yes, you may do all the work yourself on an owner occupied one family house. However, you must obtain the required permits and call for all the necessary inspections. Any other structure requires licensed contractors to perform all work. All work shall be conducted, installed and completed in a workmanlike and acceptable manner that meets the minimum requirements of the current State of Connecticut Building Code.
