Taxpayer Responsibilities
It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to pay all tax bills on time.
- Only one bill is mailed per year, even if your account is billed in two installments.
- Failure to receive a bill does not relieve you of the obligation to pay on time.
Additional reminders:
- If your annual tax total is $200 or more, you will receive two payment coupons. You may pay in one or two installments.
- Please remember to pay your January 2026 installment if you choose to split payments.
- Delinquent Demand Notices will be issued after each grace period.
- Unpaid taxes may be referred to a collection agency, State Marshal, or attorney, and bank accounts may be garnished.
Legal Authority
Per Connecticut General Statutes §§ 7-148 and 12-130 through 12-163, the Tax Collector is responsible for:
- Collecting all taxes due to the Town of East Haven
- Applying interest and fees to delinquent accounts
- Enforcing payment using available legal tools (e.g., State Marshals, Collection Agencies)
