About the Civil Service Commission
It is the primary responsibility of the Civil Service Commission to administer employment examinations to ensure town employees are hired and promoted based on merit. The Commission is committed to providing department heads with qualified candidates who have proven through the testing process that they are the best qualified to fill positions within the town.
- The Civil Service Office functions as the employment office for the Town of East Haven
- Job descriptions, test announcements and testing schedules will be posted in Job and Tests in the Civil Service menu
The Civil Service Commission is committed to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of our society through expanding the Town's use of advertising and participation in regional examinations and to uphold the principles of the Merit System.
The Commission consists of a three-member board that is appointed by the Mayor. The Chief Examiner is a Civil Service employee, hired by the Commission staff and provide the daily administration of the office. The service the Commission provides to taxpayers is twofold.
- First, it is a resource to those interested in a career in public service.
- Second, by ensuring the testing process is fair and unbiased, the most qualified candidates are hired to provide the best quality of service to the citizens of East Haven.

- How can I find out about exams?
-
Exams are advertised in the New Haven Register at least 3 times and other smaller local newspapers such as The Inner City Newspaper. Police and Fire positions are also advertised on Comcast Cable in the New Haven area and on Channel 20 in East Haven. All exams and vacant positions are also posted on a bulletin board outside the Civil Service Office and filed with the Town Clerk. Vacant positions and exams (hopefully) will be posted online.
- How can I apply for a Civil Service position in town?
-
When a position becomes vacant and there is not a valid Eligibility List for the position, the Town will then advertise and hold an examination. At that time you must complete a job application and submit it to the Civil Service Commission before the deadline.
- How long is the eligibility list for each position valid?
-
The list is valid for a period of up to 2 years.
